Notes

A musical fantasy starring Eddie Albert and Joanne Gilbert.

The Cast:
Eddie Albert - Narrator, Sea Monster
Joanne Gilbert - Nina
Lee Millar - Pinta
Thurl Ravenscroft - Señor Santa Maria

For all those who love a tale of high adventure, here is one of the great true stories of history, told anew with bright imagination and warm delight.

This is the story of the discovery of America, so vividly recounted that it brings to life the very ships themselves. Through their eyes we now relive the fateful voyage - through the eyes of the graceful young Nina, of her dashing and adventurous brother Pinta, and of their father, the gallant and courageous Señor Santa Maria. Together they sail the uncharted sea, and as their tale unfolds we share with them their hopes and fears, their laughter and their tears.

In narrative and song, in dramatization and rich musical setting, this enchanting fantasy gives new meaning and vitality to history's facts. It illuminates with touching sentiment a proud moment in our nation's history.

“The Nina The Pinta And The Santa Maria” is a rather obvious attempt by Dot Records to appeal to the growing market for Disney films and records in 1958. Toward that end, the label enlisted Ray Gilbert, co-writer of Disney’s Oscar-winning “Zip-a-dee-do-dah,” to compose the music and lyrics. Also on board for this production was Thurl Ravenscroft, whose distinctive basso voice was a staple of many Disney cartoons both at that time and later on.

The story is a re-imagining of Columbus’ 1492 voyage to the Americas as told from the point of view of his three ships. The “personalities” assigned to each of the ships is straight out of the Disney playbook. “Nina” and “Pinta” are the two “kids”; basically well-behaved but just impish enough to get into the occasional mischief.” Their “dad” is Señor Santa Maria (voiced and sung by Ravenscroft); elderly, wise and longing to “discover a new land” before he reaches the end of his days. The somewhat tepid story is given added life by Eddie Albert, whose excellent narration provides a dramatic drive it would otherwise lack.

Most of the record’s incidental music and songs have a jaunty “Zip-a-dee-do-dah” quality and are largely forgettable. The two musical highlights are “Sea Monster,” a dark little number with a slithery vocal turn from Albert and “Tell Me Pretty Star,” a hauntingly aching ballad sung by Gilbert’s daughter, Joanne. The latter song is deserving of a much wider audience than just the relative few who have heard this album. Unfortunately, however, this appears to be the only recording of it to date.
